Back to the grind, plus some

Swimming started today, and I'm assistant coach again. I've actually "outsourced" my paperwork to another teacher looking to make some money on the side. That has lightened my load at home by an hour or so a night. We've got a smaller team, but more talented than usual. Almost as many boys as girls, so if we win the League Meet it'll be because of the boys.

Roman continues to make us laugh. The boy has a great sense of humor. He's taken to calling his Daddy "Doug" - I think just because it pushes Daddy's buttons. Tonight's example: "Doug, is Thomas in your car?" He sings along with songs in the car and keeps up fairly well. We heard the same song three times today and the third time he said, "Bear song again? That's silly!" He plans out his time, too. "Watch this first, then play trains." Or, "Eat fruit snack first, then dinner." Nice try.

Schedules have been worked out at school, don't know mine officially but the bad news came immediately - my mentee, along with my other office-mate, are both moving to an elementary school. The horrors! Our school lost 2 full-time positions. Here's how school districts deal with a shortage of money - build a new elementary school. Allow current El teachers to transfer. Up the class sizes in middle school. Decrease teachers in middle school. Send them to fill in the new vacancies at the El schools. So basically, my class sizes of 30-32 are not changing anytime soon. I read an article recently where they were touting raising class sizes to 30. I don't know what school districts they had been studying, but I've never had less than 28 in my 7th & 8th grade classes. One year I had 33; my mentor at the time had 35!

Ah well. A tough Monday, coming back from break. We'll see how the rest of the week shakes out.
